LEADERSHIP

About the Executive Director:

Catherine Repman, M. Ed., began her employment with York Day Nursery after graduating from Louisiana State University. She was a pre-K teacher, assistant director and promoted to Executive Director in 1985. She has served as board member for the local CCIS, is an advisory board member for the Child Care Vocational Program at the York County School of Technology, a member of the Professional Development Committee of Focus On Our Future, and a member of the Accreditation Committee for the local chapter of NAEYC. In 2007 Catherine graduated from Penn State-York with an Early Childhood Education Focused Master’s Degree.

About the Assistant Director:

Lisa Rumsey joined the YDN child care team in June, 2003, as Assistant Director. Lisa earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development and Family Relations from Indiana University of PA and has almost 25 years of experience working in the early childhood field. She and her husband have three sons and enjoy a busy schedule with their activities.

ABOUT THE TEACHERS

  • Lead teachers have attained at minimum a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, an Associate’s and/or Bachelor’s Degree in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education, or human services field.
  • All Teaching Staff (Lead Teachers, Assistant Teachers, & Aides) participate in annual trainings selected from the eight “core knowledge areas” of the PA Core Body of Knowledge and maintain a Professional Development Record documenting their growth in knowledge areas and skills indicative of early childhood educators providing quality care. Every YDN educator participates in 24 hours of state approved trainings every year.
  • Teaching staff provide a supervised work-study environment for students enrolled in the York County School of Technology’s Child Care Academy. Students are able to apply skills learned in the child care classrooms under the guidance of professionals while gaining valuable experience.
  • YDN teaching staff and directors participated in the 12 session “Mind in the Making” program developed by the Families and Work Institute.
  • Every year the YDN educators and directors participate in the Week of the Young Child events. Three YDN teachers have received $1,000 scholarships through the Child Care Professional Awards.

AN UPDATE ON THE STATE OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATORS

  • A child in full-time child care through age 5 will spend more time with caregivers than he/she will spend in school between kindergarten and 12th grade.
  • Although high quality child care is determined largely by the amount and quality of training received by early childhood educators, Pennsylvania requires more training and monitoring of hairdressers and manicurists than of child care providers.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

YDN is committed to providing a high quality safe, secure, and nurturing environment that is vital for the healthy development of every young child. The needs and interests of each child are the basis for classroom learning experiences, whether a child is six weeks old or four years of age.

YDN strongly believes that each child is unique and possesses unlimited potential. Thus we strive to create wonderful learning environments that encourage children “to be all they can be.” Through play in multi-cultural classrooms with well-trained educators, children explore their world at their own pace, discover how to cooperate and problem solve, try out new ideas, develop language, math and motor skills, build confidence to attempt new and different activities. This stimulating environment is designed to develop the total child—emotionally, socially, physically, and intellectually.

YDN is also committed to building a strong family and center partnership in order to provide the highest quality of care and early education for all our young children. Families are encouraged to become involved at the YDN on many different levels.
